On this part of the coast the water is noticeably warmer than in Cape Town. Tropical corals and fish are to be found in Sodwana Bay, making this area the southernmost semi-tropical ecosystem. Here you can film many shark and mammal species.

Large groups of whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, congregate off the coast of Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal during summer. Up to 70 individuals have been spotted from the air over a relatively small area. This coast is also good for filming tiger sharks, Galeocerdo curier, spotted ragged tooth (grey nurse) sharks, Eugomphodus taurus, Zambezi (bull) sharks, Carcharhinus leucas, and various hammerhead sharks. The ragged tooth sharks arrive in large numbers on Protea Banks and Aliwal Shoal during the early summer, where they congregate in underwater caves. At this time the ragged tooth sharks can be approached to within a few meters.

In Sodwana Bay, near the boarder with Mozambique, I filmed whale sharks, pregnant ragged tooth sharks, manta rays and an anchovy baitball being attacked by kingfish - all in one day! Quite amazing.
